British Antarctic Survey Towards Net Zero Carbon

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) works to understand, tackle and mitigate the effects of climate change and embed evidence in decision making and climate policy. Its scientific research programmes and Net Zero Carbon Strategy underpin the UK’s commitment to:

It’s our primary goal to make working remotely, deep-field in the Antarctic safer, more efficient and carbon accountable going forward. Using this technology allows us to achieve all three. Having the ability to live-track teams on the ice is a huge asset to route planning and safety of the teams with an added benefit of peace of mind to each person on the ice knowing that if they get into trouble, a search and rescue can be deployed fast and accurately to save lives. Ben Norrish Head of Vehicle Engineering, BAS

• Achieving a net zero carbon economy by 2050

• Respond to the challenges of climate change

• Live more sustainably

BAS works with Geotab in the area of transport & logistics, developing bespoke custom telematics solutions for its snowmobiles, snow groomers and wheeled loaders that work in Antarctica and plans to expand installed units. With vehicles traveling up to 2–3,000 km away from base, BAS can actively track assets on the world’s southernmost continent, supporting vital science and sustainable operations.
