Monitoring our AI energy footprint At Geotab, we believe that Responsible AI means Sustainable AI. By monitoring the environmental impact of AI usage, we can better balance between innovation and sustainability. A foundational element of this commitment is understanding the energy footprint of our internal AI systems. We recently completed an internal AI Environmental Footprint Assessment, auditing the AI technology stack and quantifying the estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Geotab's primary AI platforms. 5 The preliminary analysis indicates that the carbon footprint associated with Geotab’s internal AI use represents a small percentage of our overall GHG inventory. The emissions saved by customers through use of our AI-powered tools are significantly greater than the carbon footprint from employee AI use.
Monitor AI landscape

Integrate results Make conscious decisions
As the industry develops more granular energy and emissions data for specific AI models and services, Geotab will continue to monitor internal AI usage metrics to establish increasingly accurate baselines and identify trends. By monitoring the evolving landscape of AI model types and their efficiency, we can help ensure our methodology remains aligned with the latest research. Through advocacy and collaboration with strategic partners, we can achieve the precise, primary data needed to provide an accurate account of our environmental impact for AI services. As a signatory of Canada's Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development of Advanced Generative AI Systems, we will continue to uphold ethical principles in the procurement, development, deployment, supply, and/or use of AI technologies, to ensure the positive potential of AI can be realized.
5 Initial estimate based on available data from technology providers, industry-recognized energy benchmarks, and academic research. This analysis provides directional insights and is subject to refinement as more granular, primary data regarding AI model energy intensity and specific cloud service emissions become available.
